Manga That Have Inspired Live-Action Movies

We often find ourselves watching a movie that has been adapted from a book we have read before. It is a different kind of entertainment: to be able to compare the movie with the book; and to see if the adaptation is fair to the movie. Moreover, sometimes the existence of an adaptation movie might be a reason by itself for us to commit to reading a book.

But did you know that white screen adaptations are also a big part of the manga culture? Manga have always been a big inspiration to the Japanese film industry. These movies even have a specific name, being referred to as “live-action movies”.As White Rain Book House, we are elated to present a list of manga that will make you consider watching the movie, however, we cannot promise that any movie can compete with a manga!

Ruroni Kenshin

Ruroni Kenshin, written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki, takes place in the Meiji era. It’s about a swordsman who seeks revenge. History, romance, vengeance and action are quite a good combination in this one. The series has many live-action movies, with the latest one released in 2021.

Death Note

Death Note is probably the most popular manga worldwide, as there probably is no one that has heard of the term “manga” yet does now nothing about Death Note. But did you know that it has several live-action movies? There are two Japanese made live-actions, a Hollywood made film starring Nat Wolff and even a Japanese tv series. Even though it is not the most imitative one, I must say that my favourite one was the tv series.

The Ghost In The Shell

Ever been a fan of Scarlett Johansson, the cyberpunk theme, or both? Say no more. The Ghost In The Shell has an Hollywood made live-action film, starring Scarlett Johansson & Juliette Binoche!

 Alita

Another inspiration for a high-budget Hollywood film was Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita, which is a female cyborg who has lost her memory. Alita might be an excellent choice for the people who enjoy the post-apocalyptic themes.

Blade of the Immortal

Manji, who had lost his younger sister, seems to be the perfect warrior, given that he is immortal - almost immortal. Now he has to keep the vengeful promise he gave to Rin, a little girl whose family was slaughtered.

Say I Love You

Tachibana Mei is a lonely, introverted girl who has been suffering from her past traumas. What she doesn’t know is that an interesting encounter with Yamato will change her perspective of bonding forever.

Kimi no Todoke

Kimi no Todoke is the story of Sawako, whose name and pale silhouette remind people of Sawako, a Japanese horror figure. With her unique qualities and her shyness, some people seem to be a bit biased against her. Will she overcome these and break her shell?

Your Lie in April

Kosoi used to be a piano genius, until the sudden death of his mother. Ever since his loss, he seemed to be suffering from numbness over the joy of living, then he met Kaori Miyazono, a violin player who drives Kosoi back into music.

Bleach

Bleach is the story of Ichigo Kurasaki, a young one who faces his destiny of becoming a Soul Reaper. In White Rain Book House, there is a big collection on Berserk available, you should give the live-action a chance after reading!

Fullmetal Alchemist

As a manga that combines the theme of cyberpunk with the European industrialization, Fullmetal Alchemist has a great potential to be a white screen adaptation. However, in order to have a better grasp of the universe it all takes place in, reading the manga beforehand is a must in this one!
