This workbook integrates the learning of spelling and the meaning of words. While the main focus of this workbook is spelling accuracy, it also aims to enhance the student's retention of the words long-term, by teaching them to focus on both the definition and the spelling of each word. The structure of each lesson in this book is designed to facilitate this simultaneous learning.
This workbook contains 20 lessons, each lesson focusing on six words at a time, with each spelling activity centered on those words. Each word is accompanied by its definition and an example sentence, to enable the student to learn the meaning of the word as they practice spelling it. There are 120 words in total which the 7th grade student is expected to learn.
Each lesson begins with a drilling exercise of the words in syllables, allowing the student to practice spelling each part of the word correctly. After the syllable drilling exercise, the student moves on to another drilling exercise of the word in full, enabling them to practice spelling the word accurately and confidently.
To reinforce learning and retention, a word search puzzle is included, containing the target words for spelling, together with their synonyms. This exercise encourages the student to stay oriented on the meanings of the words they are studying, while also providing a fun and engaging way to reinforce their knowledge of the words.
Finally, a sentence composition exercise is included, to encourage the student to write their own sentence using the word. This exercise reinforces the meaning of each word, and gives the student an opportunity to practice both its spelling and its usage in context.
This workbook provides a comprehensive and engaging approach to spelling improvement, ensuring that the student not only learns how to spell each word accurately but also retains its meaning and usage in context.
