Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish physician and writer. Although he wrote a number of series, such as his Professor Challenger stories, he is by far best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes. In later life he gained notoriety for his belief in spiritualism and the Cottingley Fairies.

The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902) is the third Sherlock Holmes novel, and the first adventure of the Great Detective published after Doyle's attempt at killing the character off. It is also by far the best-known and best-beloved Sherlock Holmes story, often adapted for film or television. The combination of the desolate setting and a horrifying creature straight out of legend has proven irresistible for over a century.
