James was brought up in Hove, Sussex, on the slopes of the South Downs overlooking the English Channel. From an early age he wrote fiction, including a successful pantomime for the local YMCA in his teens. But work took a more technical direction, leaving little time for fiction in a busy career in various government and corporate roles. James writes humorous novels. After publishing Paint the Town Red, as the final book in a successful series of three set in Peckham, south London, he was approached to write another similar story. With the Peckham Trilogy firmly concluded he decided to let some of the familiar characters from those books escape to new surroundings in Farewell to Peckham.
