The story uses two first person narrators: Heddy who muses over failed relationships, the sudden influx of people in her routine, and the good fortune of being paid well for expressing herself on canvas; and Lambert, the second narrator, plods through his days as the ever helpful companion to his new "Mom", who he feels doesn't possess the wherewithal to handle her own affairs of the heart so he sets about arranging them for her. The story brings to light a dog can also be a woman's best friend.
